New Student Seminar/SDV 100

MECC will hold the Fall 2019 New Student Seminar during Student Welcome Week Wednesday, August 21 & Thursday, August 22 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Registration will be held in the Goodloe Center in Phillips-Taylor Hall. All new students are required to attend. Completion of the two-day New Student Seminar will satisfy the SDV 100 course requirement. 

What is SDV 100?

Course Description: Assists students in transition to college. Provides overviews of college policies, procedures, curricular offerings. Encourages contacts with other students and staff. Assists students toward college success through information regarding effective study habits, career and academic planning, and other college resources available to students. Strongly recommended for beginning students. Required for graduation.

What Will You Learn?

Core Competencies: The following Core Competencies will be covered in SDV 100: Communication, Critical Thinking, Cultural and Social Understanding, Informational Literacy, and Personal Development.
Broad Goals: This course is designed to introduce the student to the personnel, the policies, and the procedures at Mountain Empire Community College. SDV 100 has been structured to help the student deal effectively and successfully with the educational philosophy of Mountain Empire Community College and to assist the student in achieving his/her personal and educational objectives.

The following topics will be taught in SDV 100:

  • Career development / exploration
  • Library Resources / Information Literacy
  • College Policies
  • College Services/Resources
  • Study Skills such as test taking, note taking, learning styles
  • Expectations for College Success
  • Goal Setting
  • Life management skills to specifically include time management and financial literacy
